Animal Crossing Tools Guide

You can’t play Animal Crossing without having a collection of tools in your pocket. About half of your activities require a tool to be completed. Without them, you’d probably just run around talking to your villagers with a few bells from selling shells and fruits.

While all games have required the possession of tools, New Horizons has changed the way we interact with tools. In earlier games, you obtained tools by buying them from various places, usually Nook’s Cranny, and then you’d hang on to them until you got something better. With the introduction of crafting, we can make our tools.

This comes with the tradeoff that nearly all the tools break and must be replaced regularly. New Horizons also adds a few new tools, including many that aren’t necessary but add some fun to your game.

Using and Switching Between Tools

Before we review all the different tools and their purposes, we’ll review how to use them while you play. In every game, you need to have your tool in your pocket to use it. Tools can be stored, but they can’t be used when they are.

You can only use one tool at a time, and the tool you’re using will appear in your hand. The tool in your hand will not appear in your pocket, except for New Horizons.

You can fill your pocket while holding the tool, but this also means you’ll need to drop something not to hold a tool, but it will be rare to have empty hands. In the case of New Horizons, the tools remain in your pocket while in use. This keeps your pockets from changing too much while you switch between tools.

Once the tool is in your hand, you only need to press A. Some tools can be used anywhere, but others require facing a certain object. We’ll go over those tools more in-depth later.

You’ll almost always have multiple tools in your pocket and might need to switch between them quickly. There are a couple of ways to pick a new tool. The first and slowest method is to open your pocket, select your new tool, and choose the option to equip it. This is a good way to know for sure you have the right tool, and is usually used by people just starting the game.

The faster way is to use the arrows to the left. This will switch to one of the tools in your pocket next to the one you are holding. This is a good way to change tools quickly, but it might take organization and practice to know exactly which tool you’re grabbing. You also might have to hit the buttons multiple times depending on how many tools you have.

The final switching method is only found in New Horizons and was most likely implemented because of the huge variety of tools. It is the tool ring. You can access the tool ring by hitting the down arrow. It will show a circle of eight tools of your choosing, and you can then use the joystick to pick your new tool.

You won’t have immediate access to the tool ring. Once you’ve paid your first 5,000 miles to Nook for the getaway package, you can buy the ring for 800 miles at the Nook Stop.

To add a tool to your ring, open your pocket and pick the tool you want to add. Select the Favorite option, and this will open the tool ring. You can then use the joystick to decide where you want the tool to go. I like to put my most used tools in the cardinal directions and my least used on the diagonals.

Once a tool is in your ring, it will have a star next to its icon in your pocket. If you no longer want that tool in your ring, you can add a new tool in its place or select it and click the Unfavorite option.

There’s often debate about the best way to sort the tools in your pocket. Do you put them in the top row, bottom row, or leave them in the random spots they appear in? In my opinion, they belong in the top row. It’s easy to see and emphasizes their importance. I can see the argument for the bottom row as well, though.

This way, if a tool breaks, its spot won’t be filled by the next item you pick up. But I can’t accept any other positioning. They are all too chaotic and messy, but what you do with your tools is your business.

Important Tools

These will be the tools that are essential to your gameplay. These are to ones I would recommend keeping in your pocket at all times and keeping in your tool ring. Once you’re familiar with the game and how you like to play, you can swap out the ones you use less for other fun tools you want more.

Fishing Pole

Animal crossing Fishing Pole

The fishing pole is used for exactly what it sounds like, fishing. When you see a shadow in the water, you can stand in front of it, hold your fishing pole, and press A.

This will cast your bobber into the water. You don’t need to be beside the water since your cast is a few squares long. When you cast, try to make the bobber land right in front of the fish, so it notices and starts to bite. This skill will take some trial and error to get the hang of.

Once the fish sees the bait, watch and listen carefully. It will nibble at the bait a couple of times, then bite. The bobber will go underwater, and there will be a louder noise. Press A as soon as this happens to reel in the fish. Too soon, and you’ll scare off the fish. Too late, and the fish will leave.

Every game includes a regular fishing rod and a golden fishing rod, New leaf adds a Silver rod, and New Horizons has several more. The golden and silver rods make catching fish easier.

The extra rods in New Horizons have no bonus effect, but every rod, except flimsy, can be customized. Here’s a list of all the rods games and how to attain them.

Net

Net animal crossing

The net is used to catch bugs and other floating items. To use the net, you must line yourself up to face your target roughly 2 spaces away. You might have more than one chance to catch most bugs, so don’t worry about being too precise.

Some bugs are stationary, while some move around. Bugs that stay in one place will fly away if you miss them or run too close to them. Moving bugs can be chased and won’t disappear after one net swing, but they don’t stay around forever. For example, while butterflies fly around for a long time, grasshoppers might jump into a river and disappear. It just depends on the behavior of the bug.

Easily spooked bugs need to be approached stealthily. While holding the net, press and hold A, and you’ll keep the net at the ready and walk slowly. You can then sneak up on your target and release A to swing your net.

Much like the fishing rod, the net and the golden net have been present in every game. The golden and silver nets increase the effective net size (without changing the visual size) to make catching bugs easier. New Horizon’s nets, except flimsy, can be customized but don’t have any effect on catching bugs.

Shovel

shovel animal crossing new horizons

The primary uses of a shovel are digging and hitting. While seemingly simple, there are many things these actions can accomplish.

The hitting is used to mine rocks. You can stand next to a rock and hit A while facing the rock. You’ll then hit the rock with the shovel, and it might drop an item. Rocks that do drop items can only be harvested once a day. Depending on the season, there might also be bugs that will appear when you hit a rock. Make sure to switch to your net quickly because they disappear after a few seconds.

Once you hit a rock that drops items, you have limited time to harvest all you can. The maximum number of items is eight, one for each empty space around the rock. If you have items taking up space next to the rock, the items won’t drop. To ensure you get all the items you can, you need to hit the rock as fast as possible.

To do this, create a barrier behind you. You can do this by digging a line of holes. The most effective way is to make two holes in the corner of a rock. Stand between the rock and the barrier while you hit it. This prevents you from being pushed back from the recoil and continues hitting the rock. Once you’ve hit the rock, keep pressing A until the rock stops dropping items.

In older games, most of the rocks wouldn’t do anything. However, one rock would drop bells when hit. With each hit, it would drop greater amounts of bells until you harvested all you could for the day or ran out of time. New Horizons also has one bell rock, but the others aren’t useless. They will drop stone and ore that can be used for crafting.

Digging is the most common use of the shovel and the action that can accomplish the widest variety of tasks. First, you can dig up items that are underground.

Buried objects are indicated by a brown star shape on the ground. Press A while facing the star, and you’ll dig it up. You can also dig up plants. Standing by flowers, shrubs, or tree stumps allows you to dig them up. In New Horizons, flowers and shrubs will be put in your pocket to be sold or replanted. Otherwise, the plant will be destroyed.

Typically you’ll be digging up fossils and gyroids. Fossils will appear daily, and gyroids will appear after rain or where you buried and watered a gyroid fragment in New Horizons. You’ll also be able to dig up a special spot in New Horizons. Each day there will be a bright golden spot on the ground.

Digging into this spot will give you a thousand bells and a glowing hole. If you bury bells in this hole, it will create a bell tree. The tree will grow to produce one crop of bells. The amount is dependent on how much you bury. Older games also had money trees, but you needed a golden shovel to grow them.

You can use the shovel to dig a hole on soft ground, like grass, dirt, or sand. You can then bury something by selecting it in your pocket and picking the bury option. Once the object is buried, a brown star will appear on the ground unless it is a fruit, then a sapling will sprout.

Eating food in New Horizons will give you a power-up. These power-ups can only be utilized with a shovel. By hitting a rock while powered up, you will break it.

The rock will then spawn in a new spot the next day. Using the shovel on a tree while powered-up causes you to dig up the entire tree. You can then replant the tree elsewhere. To remove power-ups without affecting your environment, sit on a toilet.

Every game has included at least a regular shovel and a golden shovel. Some also included silver shovels, and New Horizons has a few customizable variations. Here’s how to obtain them in every game.

Watering Can

golden watering can animal crossing

The watering can is used to water plants, usually flowers. Watering plants helps them breed and, in older games, keeps them alive. You can also water crops in New Horizons to increase the number of vegetables they produce. After a plant is watered, it will sparkle. Rain also counts as watering, so you don’t need to worry about using your watering can on rainy days.

Watering cans are crucial for breeding flowers. They won’t grow independently, and if you want to collect all the hybrid flowers, you’ll need to water them daily. It will also increase their chances of breeding if a friend waters them too.

In New Horizons, you can also use watering cans to grow gyroids. After you’ve buried a gyroid fragment found on your beach or a boat tour island, you can water it. The brown star starts to emit a cloud to show it’s been watered, and the next day, you can dig up a gyroid.

Watering cans were introduced in Wild World. Each game since then has included at least two watering cans. Different variations of watering cans have bonus effects. They might increase the number of spaces watered or encourage rare flower growth. Here are the watering cans in each game, how to get them, and what they can do.

Axe

axe animal crossing

The axe is used to cut down trees and hit rocks. However, I would not recommend using it on rocks. It is slower than the shovel and getting all the items before time runs out with be much harder.

To cut down trees, stand before the tree and press A to hit it with the axe. After the first time, the tree will act as if it was shaken, dropping any fruit or bugs that may be in its branches. If you hit it two more times, then the tree will fall, leaving a stump.

Hitting trees with an axe in New Horizons will also give you wood (or bamboo if you hit a bamboo stalk). You’ll get one piece of wood for each hit, and the type of wood is randomized. There are also axe variations in New Horizons that allow you to hit trees and get wood without cutting the tree down. This is the only game to have axes to do so.

Axes have been included since the first game and are the only tool before New Horizons to be breakable. Here’s how you can get each axe in each game.

Slingshot

Slingshot

The slingshot shoots balloons tied to presents out of the sky. Once the balloons are popped, they will drop gifts. What is in the presents varies depending on the game. In earlier games, they would give regular items, and some games had the chance of rarer furniture, like the Super Mario series or Balloon Series.

New Horizons has the largest variety of possible gifts coded by the color of the balloon. Yellow has bells, blue has crafting materials, and red and green have recipes, furniture, clothing, wallpaper, and flooring.

Balloons will be floating in the sky above the character or on the top screen, depending on the game. To pop the balloon, hold the slingshot, stand under the balloon, and press A. Holding A will allow you to have the slingshot ready while you wait for the balloon to float over you. Try to pop the balloon near empty ground. It will be lost if the present falls into the water or on top of something.

Knowing exactly where to stand to fire at the balloon can be hard. Standing underneath it from the right and left is fairly simple, but you can easily be too far up or down. There’s no easy way to explain that, so it’s best learned through trial and error.

The slingshot was introduced in Wild World and has been in every game since. Up until New Horizons, any upgraded slingshot shot multiple pellets. This made hitting balloons easier since you didn’t have to line up your shot as precisely. Here are all the slingshots you can get and how to get them.

Ladder and Vaulting Pole

Ladder and Vaulting Pole crossing

The ladder and vaulting pole are two tools introduced in New Horizons. They help you move around islands without bridges or stairs. Neither is breakable, so you don’t have to worry about being stranded. You also can’t customize either one.

The ladder allows you to climb up and down cliffs. Hold the ladder and press A while facing the cliff to use it. You can get a recipe for the ladder from Tom Nook when he tasks you with building a house for a villager or buy it from Nook’s Cranny for 500 Bells. It requires four of each kind of wood to be crafted.

The vaulting pole is used to get over rivers. You can use it by holding the pole and pressing A while facing the river. You can only use it to get across rivers three spaces or wider, and there must be empty space to land on the other side. You obtain the recipe from Blathers when he arrives, and it requires 5 softwood.

Fun Tools

wands animal crossing

While all the previous tools have been fun in their own way, they serve important tasks. These tools are used purely for fun or aesthetics. A few have some purpose or perform a useful task, but they aren’t necessary. You can play to the fullest without having to use a single one of these items. Though, it does enhance the experience to play around with them.

Timer

The timer does exactly what it sounds like it does. You can select it and pick an amount of time. The timer will then count down and alert you when your time has run out.

The timer is in a strange place between useful and fun tools. It serves a purpose and is usually sold alongside other tools. Still, you’ll only need it if you want to do something within the time limit that you’ve chosen. I’ve never used a timer, but it would be fun when playing with other people and making your own mini-games.

The timer first appeared in Wild World and has been available at Nook’s store ever since. It cost 500 bells in all the earlier games and 840 Bells in New Horizons. There have never been any variations o the timer.

Toys

These tools are meant to make your character feel more alive. Some toys celebrate certain holidays and events, like fireworks shows and New Year’s Eve. They are brightly colored and can be used to pass the time while partying with your villagers.

Others are items often held by your villagers. This is a way to fit in with your animal friends and do some activities with them. You can obtain the toys through Redd’s Raffle, buying them from Nook Shopping, or crafting.

Some toys can be kept forever, but others can run out or break. Any fireworks or party poppers can only be used once. Bubble blowers can be used a few times before they run out of bubbles and disappear. While balloons can’t be used up, they can be lost. If you run while wearing the King Tut Mask and holding a balloon, you may trip and let the balloon go.

  • Balloon (Redd’s Raffle or 720 Bells at Nook’s Cranny)

  • Duster (1,320 Bells)
  • Foxtail (Craftable)
  • Nice Branch (Craftable)

Wands

Depending on what aspects of Animal Crossing you find important, this might be a highly useful tool. Wands work similarly to the tool ring, except they let you change between outfits. You can set up these outfits at any item that enables you to change your clothes, like wardrobes, dressers, and fridges.

While wearing the wand outfit, you won’t be able to take anything on or off without removing the entire outfit using a wand. You can’t use the Able Sister’s changing room or a wet suit.

Wands are exclusive to New Horizons and are crafted using star pieces and wherever kind of item they are themed after, like flowers or holiday items. The recipes are given to you by Celeste, found at the Shooting Star Island, or given during holiday events. They all work the same, and the only differences are aesthetics. Here are all the wands and the materials they use.

Instruments

Another tool category in the plethora of items New Horizons added is instruments. Of course, there have always been instruments in the form of furniture, but now you can hold something smaller and make some music on the go. You can use the instruments by holding them and pressing or holding A.

You’ll play a single note each time you press A. If a music player is near you, you’ll match the music playing. Here are the available musical instruments.

  • Maracas (2,400 Bells)
  • Tamborine (1,800 Bells)
  • Ocarina (Craftable)
  • Pan Flute (Cratable)

Holiday Items

There are so many holidays from so many cultures celebrated in Animal Crossing. The larger, widely spread holidays get big events. In New Horizons, smaller holidays get some attention through seasonal items sold in the Nook Shopping app. If a holiday has a tradition that involves a held item, you can likely find it.

They don’t have any purposes, but you can reenact traditions or enjoy cute animations when held. Here are some holiday tools you can buy or craft and the days they celebrate.

FAQ

Question: What are the 8 tools in Animal Crossing?

Answer: Depending on how you want to define the tool, there are far more than eight tools in Animal Crossing. However, if you are looking for the eight most important tools to play the game, they would be:
• Fishing Rod
• Net
• Shovel
• Watering Can
• Axe
• Slingshot
• Ladder (In New Horizons)
• Vaulting Pole (In New Horizons)

Question: Are there unbreakable tools in Animal Crossing?

Answer: In previous games, all tools were unbreakable except for the axe. In New Horizons, nearly every tool is breakable. Of the most often used tools, the unbreakable ones are the ladder, vaulting pole, and wands. Most of the tools rarely used or only used for fun are unbreakable.

Question: How long do golden tools last?

Answer: While golden tools break like their flimsy counterparts, they last about twice as long as standard tools. Each golden tool has a different amount of uses.
• Fishing rod and net: 90 uses

• Slingshot: 60 uses
